Sound Memories is a Community Interest Company founded by Cheryl Beer, who was made an honorary member of the Top 100 Women Pioneers of Wales, for her inspirational contribution to Welsh life. Cheryl has been designing and delivering award winning Arts & Health Innovation for nearly 30 years, paving the way to positive social change for many thousands of marginalised & vulnerable communities across South & West Wales. As well as her extensive experience as a practitioner and Creative Director, she is a published academic, specialising in Life Story & Empowerment. Throughout her career, her work has contributed to the long term National vision & strategy of Arts & Social Well Being.
In response to the Covid 19 pandemic, Cheryl has brought together her expertise in the fields of Environmental Sound, Storytelling & Creative Digital Media to create a not for profit, community interest company that builds resilience through the Arts, at a time when we need it the most.

The Sleeping Storyteller
Sound Memories began in 2014 as a piece of research for Cheryl's Masters Degree at The Atrium in Cardiff, where she studied Life Story & Memory at a Dementia Friendly Care Home. The work won an Outstanding contribtuon to Drama from teh UNiversoty of South Wales and led to her joinin ghte Joseph Rowntree team 'A Better Life' transforming the care sector for older people. Partnering with Swansea niversity, the project was initially focusse don puclishing, and thne became a digital radio station based in Care Homes, collating Digital Life Stories & Environmental Sound maps. She co-write a paper for the INternational Storytelling for health Journal regarinf Life Story & Empowerment for older people living with dementia and was the inaugral Creative igital Developer for the Storyteling for health International Conerence.During Covid 19, Cheryl secured a grant from The Arts Council of Wales National Lotter Good Causes to extend her work with Environmental Sound MAps, traning 4 other Sound Artists to join her in recording Nature Narrative based on teh favourite walks for older people, helping them to stay connected with teh palces they love. She also secured a support from FUSION to create Sensory Nature Boxes to accompany the sound banks.
Parlour Press Publishing supports communities to explore health & well being through creative writing and publishing. The project began 20 years ago when Cheryl was asked to tour youth clubs facilitating creative writing workshops with youth clubs across the Caerphilly County Borough, She published 'Tales of Two Valleys' and distributed it to schools and libraries, winning a National Youth Excellence Award. Cheryl was commissioned for a 2nd Creative Writing & Publishing Project, this time empowering with women's groups via poetry, across the county. The project won another Excellence Award and was nominated for a National Gold Award. It was the beginning of a tiny publishing house that Cheryl has run since, from her parlour, hence the name. Parlour Press has published 78 publications, enabling many hundreds of people to be published for the first time.
